The Music of Ellen: A
New CD Called The Truth is There
It's been
a year of great inspiration and many challenges
for Catholic singer and songwriter Ellen
Soukup of Lincoln. "2002 began
with a flood of new melodies flowing into
my mind. It was a little bewildering, since
I have never experienced anything like that
before," says Ellen. "Prior to
that, I had only written one song. I strongly
believe the Holy Spirit was doing the prodding,
and He can be very convincing."
The result
is a new CD called The Truth Is There, with
11 original Christian contemporary and gospel
songs inspired by different experiences
and influences in Ellen's life. "It's
almost a little scary to think people can
see directly into my heart and soul through
this recording. I also feel wonderfully
blessed to be a tool of the Holy Spirit
through this music ministry."
After having
major surgery this year, and then dealing
with a painful sinus infection brought on
by a wasp sting, Ellen says the challenges
she's faced only made her more determined
to finish the CD. "At times, it felt
like I was in the middle of some sort of
spiritual battle, with the devil doing what
he could to get me to give up on this project."
Like her
past recordings, The Truth is There has
music all ages can appreciate. What sets
it apart from the CDs Thy Will Be Done and
What Shall We Give (her Christmas CD) is
that there's more instrumentation backing
up many of her songs, accentuating the energy
of her smooth and spiritually vibrant voice.
"Some of my songs are very upbeat,
while others could be considered more meditative,"
says Ellen.
The title-track
of the CD was written for people, especially
youth, who may have difficulty discerning
how God's truth fits into their lives. "The
truth is all around us, it's just up to
us to see it," explains Ellen. "All
in all, it's my hope that this recording
not only strengthens our Catholic beliefs,
but also opens a window into souls that
may have questioned their faith."
